Position: Boundary Waters Connect Internship 

 

Location: Based in Ely, Minnesota

 

Dates: Begins mid-may,  minimum 3-months 

 

Supervised By: Lacey Squier, Boundary Waters Connect Manager 

 

Background: Boundary Waters Connect was organized by the economic and community development task force of Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness. Boundary Waters Connect supports and invests in healthy communities and healthy economies in northeastern Minnesota. Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness unites people to advocate for the protection of the wilderness and wild places, especially the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the greater Quetico-Superior Ecosystem. 

 

Primary duties include, but are not limited to: 
 

  • Serve as a representative of Boundary Waters Connect (BWC) and Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness (NMW); provide a welcoming and educational presence for visitors to the Ely HQ facility, and attend various community meetings and events. 

  • Develop content for and post content to BWC YouTube channel, BWC Facebook page, and BWC Instagram account. 

  • Support the hybrid (virtual and in-person) community forum known as Tuesday Group. This includes maintaining a publicly available digital archive of recorded Tuesday Group programs and submitting Tuesday Group event information to various public calendars. 

  • Research data, trends, and best practices among economically successful rural communities. 

  • Populate list of governmental and nonprofit resources relevant to businesses and new residents for economic and community development in NE Minnesota. 

  • Collaborate with BWC manager to plan and facilitate BWC-sponsored programs, including professional development programs in Society Hall Workspace, pocket park events, and other BWC collaborations. 

  • Support BWC welcome program for new residents. 

  • Provide administrative support to Ely-based NMW staff. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Desired Skills or Qualifications: 
 

  • Demonstrated leadership skills. 

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ), as well as a demonstrated willingness to engage in ongoing DEIJ education. 

  • Experience with event planning and facilitation. 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage positively with a broad array of people and constituencies. 

  • Demonstrated comfort with learning new technologies. 

  • Familiarity with the Google suite of products, Zoom, and databases such as EveryAction.

  • Ability to work independently. 

  • Passion for Boundary Waters Connect’s mission. 

 

Requirements: 
 

  • 32 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends. 

  • Intern must provide their own transportation. 

 

Benefits: 
 

  • Compensation at $15/hour

  • If applicable, we will work with you to arrange college credit for this position.

  • Training is provided.

  • Housing may be coordinated if needed.
